Eco-Project Friday!!!

Here is a fun organic food project I did with my kids.

Do your kids like applesauce? Well teach them how to make organic homemade applesauce for next to nothing.

1. Go to your local farmer's market or grocery store and buy a bag of organic apples.
2. Boil about 2 cups of water in a pot.
3. While your water is boiling, cut several apples into quarters pieces.
4. Place the apples in the boiling water for about 5 minutes or until they are a little tender.
5. Place the apples in a blender with about a teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 cup of water.
6. Puree the apples in the blender until smooth.
7. Taste, add sugar or water depending on your desired consistency.
8. Eat up until your taste buds are satisfied!

These lovely notebooks are a fun activity for the whole family and a great way to recycle paper, which can make a big difference for the environment.

Tools and Materials
25 sheets of scrap paper
Paper cutter
2 pieces of 8 1/2-by-11-inch card stock
2 binder clips
Ruler
Pencil
Stapler
12-by-12-inch decorative craft paper
Bone folder
Double-sided tape

Recycled Notebook How-To
1. Count out 25 sheets of scrap paper. Organize all written text facing up and in same direction. Cut sheets of scrap paper in half, 5 sheets at a time, using a paper cutter.

2. Cut 2 pieces of card stock in half with the paper cutter. Sandwich cut sheets between 2 pieces of card stock. Make sure all the paper is aligned, and then secure sheets to card stock with 2 binder clips on the left side of the notebook.

3. Using a pencil and a ruler, draw a line from top to bottom, 1/8 inch in from the left edge as a guideline for the staples. Staple down on the guideline.
Tip: If you're creating recycled notebooks in bulk, it's faster to staple both sides -- creating 2 books for each 25 sheets of 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper -- and then get the paper cut in half at a copy store that has a heavy-duty paper cutter.

4. Cut decorative craft paper to 8 5/8 inches wide. Fold paper in half with bone folder. Press a stapled-together stack of 25 sheets of scrap paper and card stock against the middle of the decorative craft paper to create a book spine. Use double-sided tape to secure decorative paper to card stock.

5. Trim edge of cover for neatness and fit: With ruler and bone folder, score about 1/2 inch in from spine; fold to create finished notebook shape. Excess decorative paper can be used as a matching bookmark.

Did you know that every person throws away approximately four pounds of garbage every day? Doesn’t seem like a lot? Well multiply four pounds of garbage for every person living in this world and the number is astonishing. How can we reduce the amount of garbage filling up our landfills? Recycle, Recycle, Recycle! It is so important to recycle as much of your trash as possible. Items such as paper, aluminum cans, newspaper, and cardboard boxes should never make their way into your trash cans.If your area lacks a recycling program, take the initiative to set-up your own recycling system.

1. Designate an area in your home to set-up your recyclable bins

2. Purchase a couple of storage bins or a linen laundry separator to store your recyclable items

3. Get the information on your local recycling center or dump site.

4. Get into the habit of putting items in your recycling station instead of the trash can.

5. After a week or two (or whenever your recycling center becomes full), take the kids on a trip to your local recycling center.

6. Enjoy your small contribution to a greener earth!!!!

Eco-Project Friday!!! (Make play clay)

I have an interesting and fun project for you this Friday. Who ever knew that dryer lint from the laundry was recyclabe? Well, it most certainly is. Try this clay recipe using the dryer lint from your laundry and be amazed at the results!!

Mix 3 cups of dryer lint, 2 cups of water, and 1 cup of flour in a saucepan. Then add 1/8 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Mix over low heat until mixture is smooth and binds together. Use the clay to create sculptures or use different molds to make different designs. Sit your art piece out to dry for 3-7 days. When completely dry, paint your piece different colors.

Materials needed

Leftover Wrapping Paper
Clear, repositionable contact paper

Instructions

1. Get parent's permission to stick things on the wall. Cut different shapes out of wrapping paper. Use wrapping paper that you have leftover from other occasions and that matches with your room decor. Get creative with your shapes.

2. Peel the backing off of the contact paper, and then stick the design side of the wrapping paper to the sticky side of the contact paper. Restick the backing onto the contact paper.

3. Cut out each decal, leaving a quarter-inch border of contact paper around it. Stick the decals to the wall. Now enjoy your new decor!

Small Steps can make a big difference

One small step can make a huge difference in the "go green" initiative. The next time you decide to go out on a shopping trip, take a couple of reusable shopping bags rather than getting your items bagged in plastic.

The Environmental Protection Agency reported that in 2001, somewhere between 500 billion and a trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. Of those, millions end up end up in the litter stream outside of landfills.

Once in the environment, these plastic bags can take months to hundreds of years to breakdown. Also, as they decompose, tiny toxic bits seep into the lakes, rivers, oceans, and soils.

Many retailers are now offering reusable shopping totes for sale. I have seen them priced anywhere from 1-4 dollars. Also, some of the retailers have committed to donating a portion of the proceeds from these sales to organizations and foundations dedicated to protecting our environment.

Although I support cloth diapering 100%, I haven't had much success incorporating it into my lifestyle. Therefore, I have been on the search for a reasonable Eco-friendly alternative. Baby Bottle Hazard Bisphenol-A

After seeing this story in so many reports, I decided to do a little research on my own. According to thegreenguide.com ( a National Geographic site), Bisphenol-A has come under increased scrutiny, given studies showing that the substance mimics the hormone estrogen, meaning that it can duplicate, block or exxagerate hormonal responses.

Recent research suggests that BPA's effects extend beyond the reproductive system. A growing number of scientists are concluding, from animal tests, that exposure to BPA in the womb raises the risk of certain cancers, hampers fertility and could contribute to childhood behavioral problems such as hyperactivity.

Now armed with this information, you decide. As for me, I have decided to discontinue my use of the Avent bottle which contains this chemical. I would rather be on the safe side when it comes to my baby. Now of course breastfeeding is always the best option (which I did for the first 5 months) but if you opt to bottle feed you want to make sure your baby is getting the very best!
